Roger Blackwood was born on June 8, 1921 in Detroit to Fred Harrison Blackwood and Bessie Mae Blackwood. He graduated in 1943 with a Business Administration degree from Michigan State University. Blackwood served in the US Army from 1943 to 1946 as a Second Lieutenant. On August 20, 1948, he marries Barbara Cavan.
